1 Super flumina Babylonis,	א עַל נַהֲרוֹת בָּבֶל		1 By the waters of Babylon,
illic sedimus et flevimus,	שָׁם יָשַׁבְנוּ גַּם-בָּכִינוּ		there we sat and wept,
dum recordaremur tui, Sion.	בְּזָכְרֵנוּ אֶת-צִיּוֹן.		when we remembered thee, O Zion.
2 In salicibus in medio ejus	ב עַל-עֲרָבִים בְּתוֹכָהּ		2 As for our harps, we hanged them up
suspendimus organa nostra.	תָּלִינוּ כִּנֹּרוֹתֵינוּ		upon the trees that are therein
3 quia illic interrogaverunt nos,	ג  כִּי שָׁם שְׁאֵלוּנוּ שׁוֹבֵינוּ דִּבְרֵי-שִׁיר		3 For there they that led us into captivity required of us the words of songs.
qui captivos duxerunt nos, verba cantionum;	וְתוֹלָלֵינוּ שִׂמְחָה		And they that carried us away, said:
et qui abduxerunt nos: Hymnum cantate nobis de canticis Sion.	שִׁירוּ לָנוּ מִשִּׁיר צִיּוֹן.		Sing ye to us a hymn of the songs of Sion.
4 Quomodo cantabimus canticum Domini in terra aliena?	ד אֵיךְ נָשִׁיר אֶת-שִׁיר-יְהוָה עַל אַדְמַת נֵכָר.		4 How shall we sing the song of the Lord in a strange land?
